Coffee has earned this distinction, a lot of which has to do with the caffeine that they contain that stimulates the body in keeping it awake. Most doctors would say that excessive intake of caffeine is bad for the body since it affects the blood stream and is really a form of abusing the body in its regular working clock.

But in these times, such has been a choice. Either to sleep and be content or work until you can to be able to maintain their level of proficiency. Some would call it unfair but looking at today’s people, such has been a common picture of people wanting to save their name in the face of efficiency and reliability.

The Coffee Genome Project

coffee.jpg
Science is now being used on everything we see. It has come a long way from the classrooms. It is now very much an everyday living thing that, thanks to television and some great teachers (and writers) most everyone understands. Thanks to the show CSI, everyone knows how important DNA is. Who would have thought though that it would also be important for coffee growers?

In Brazil, they have what is known as the Coffee Genome project. Begun in 2004, various institutions and universities throughout the country are engaged in finding solutions to improving the growth of coffee. They look to find ways to make the fruits hardier and better able to withstand pests without destroying the quality of the bean or harming the plant. It makes quite a change from the times when the farmers used arsenic to get rid of the pests. Then the pests may be killed but the farmers to would be poisoned. Not the ideal solution.

Currently, Brazil now has the largest coffee data bank, thanks to all the organizations involved in the research. It now has over 200,000 DNA sequences stored. They note that there are over a hundred kind of coffee but only Arabica and Robusta are grown commercially. The rest will now be utilized to genetically improve the two chosen kinds.

Did you know that in Constantinople (what is now known as Istanbul) a woman could divorce her husband for failing to keep the family Ibrik or coffee pot filled? If this old Turkish Law were still in effect and applied in more countries, there would be a lot of divorced women on the globe.

Coffee assumed a social importance. This beverage may not be flashy or knock anyone out but it has a way of creeping into ones heart and soul and becoming simply unforgettable. You simply get accustomed to having it as a part of your daily life.

Though coffee may no longer have as much power as it used to in social situations, its popularity has by no means faded out. Colombian Coffee

Coffee…hot sweet coffee…a drink to absolutely savor. It brings with it such a rich taste and experience that is more than just another drink. It truly is an experience.

Among the most enjoyed is Colombian coffee. Its very name sounds exotic to some, evoking an image of the country and its people. This coffee bean is very familiar to most coffee drinkers.

Coffee coming from South America is generally considered mild and balanced. Its taste is sharper than that of North American beans. For those who are not fond of the bitter brew, this is a good place to start. It helps that this is one brew that doesn’t or barely does leave an aftertaste.
Colombia is the second biggest exporter of coffee. The beans come from two regions. The central region harvests coffee from Medillian, Armenia and Manizales (MAM). Coffee production from Bogota and Bucaramanga on the other hand are part of the eastern mountain region.

Colombian coffee has a naturally sweet scent and chocolatey taste much appreciated by those who love chocolate. It is heavy bodied which suits those who prefer their coffee with cream. We find that Colombian coffee is a very forgiving brew for those who wish to experiment, which is why it is a favorite.

You’ll probably hear the term Colombian Supremo or Excelso. This actually refers to the coffee bean size. The Supremo is bigger than the Excelso. The Supremo is said to be supreme but you need to decide that for yourself.

If you really want to rate this coffee fairly, please ask for top-notch vintage beans and not just Colombian coffee the next time you go to your local coffee house. It would also be unfair to judge this coffee based on a brew you made from a can marked Supremo that you buy in the local supermarket. The true premium Colombian coffee is there but you need to check carefully to truly get the best experience and not just another insipid brew.

When Ordinary Coffee Just Won’t Do

bluejamaicanwhole300.jpg

It is quite common to hear people go: “coffee?” at least once a day. Even if they don’t say it out loud, they are bound to find themselves with a cup or mug in their hand savoring either the smell or the taste of the brew. Even those of the population who say that they don’t drink coffee have been to a coffee shop and enjoyed the rich scent that permeates the shop while chatting with their friends.

There are so many varieties to choose from. There are so many varied tastes and textures to coffee that it can be hard to decide which one is perfect. So far though, I have yet to hear anyone disagree that Jamaica‘s Blue Mountain Coffee is delicious.

The Blue Mountains are a range of hills on the eastern side of the Jamaican island. The coffee is grown just below 5,500 feet where nature has created a wonderful home for the coffee plants. They are grown just below the forest reserve. The combination of the terrain, the rainfall and the Blue Mountain mist combine to create beans that make the base for a wonderful brew that has a taste so clean it is sweet. It is smooth rich and just absolutely perfect!

If you can’t decide what to get your best friend for her birthday and she lives on coffee, you won’t go wrong if you choose to get her some Blue Mountain coffee as a gift. There is a limited amount available since unlike most, these beans are not grown by plantations but by small area farmers. Its rarity is partly why it is such a treasure. Try some for yourself!

The History of Viennese Coffee – Part 2

coffee

Coffee, as it was prepared then in Istanbul, was a concoction of pulp in water. The Viennese did not take to this, and business was bad. Kolschitzky then, had the inspiration to filter his coffee, to add to it a spoon of cream and a spoon of honey. Success was immediate. This gave Kolschitzky the impetus, to start again.

First he decided to use every newspaper in the city. Then he asked a friend and local pastry cook, Peter Wender, to create a cake especially for him . “What can I make which is completely new?” objected Wender, “with only flour, sugar, eggs and milk, one can not make anything really different!” “Then, give it a new shape,” replied the cafe owner, “my coffee comes from the victory over the Turks, the Turks have a crescent on their flag. Make me something in the shape of a crescent.” Thus was born the Kippel, the basis of what is today called the “viennoiseries”.
